Has professional development in higher education become a privilege rather than a guarantee? Are some professionals afforded regular opportunities to grow, attend conferences, and expand their networks, while others may only encounter these experiences occasionally, if at all? 

These reflections came to me after attending my first AACRAO Meeting. In the days leading up to the conference, I found myself feeling a mix of excitement and uncertainty. I wondered if I would be able to navigate my packed schedule of sessions, step outside of my comfort zone, and fully engage in the experience. Like many first-time attendees, I questioned what it would all feel like.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. (1941–2026) was a towering figure in American civil rights, politics, and international diplomacy for over six decades. He died on February 17, 2026, at age 84 at his home in Chicago.
