Job Description Summary

Creating Opportunities for Academic Success and Transfer (COAST) Advisors facilitate recruitment efforts and coordinate programs and service delivery to eligible dual enrollment students and high school seniors within Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) and designated territories. Through various modalities and with the use of technology, advisors provide guided assistance and direct counsel to students and their families on every aspect of the college enrichment process from career exploration and development, scholarship and financial aid, placement and standardized testing, and the application and enrollment process in collaboration with pertinent offices from initial contact to registration for classes and successful transition to an assigned professional advisor. Regular assessment will be required to measure the overall impact of the service on student success.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in student personnel services, higher education administration, a social science or related field, or equivalent formal training in a related field.
  • Combination of education and related experience for a total of six years.
  • Experience making small group presentations.
  • Experience providing direct service to a diverse population including disadvantaged students and/or students with disabilities.
  • Experience training and coordinating efforts with faculty and staff for programming and planning activities or services.

CRITERIA: The following criteria, which are not the sole criteria used in the final hiring decision, will be used to review the applications of those persons who meet the stated minimum qualifications and to select those qualified applicants who will be interviewed.   • Knowledge of higher education institution policies and procedures
  • Familiarity with a large urban school system, Prince George’s County Public Schools preferred
  • Ability to develop, cultivate, and manage professional relationships with school-based staff, students, administration, and community partners to support student success.
  • Knowledge of student development with the ability to incorporate a combination of enrollment, career, and/or advising industry standards and best practices to meet students’ needs
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English
  • Excellent time management skills to develop, implement, and manage student recruitment programs
  • Ability to work independently with assigned tasks with little or no supervision
  • Skill in successfully marketing/recruiting program participants and retaining high school program participants
  • Proficient use of alternative media/methods to engage multiple constituencies
  • Ability to learn tasks quickly and implement them efficiently
  • Ability to travel to and from recruitment programs
  • Strong people skills, good judgment, attention to detail, and strong decision-making skills
  • Ability to understand, anticipate, and respond to middle and secondary school issues as well as issues affecting current college students

Job Requirements
  • This is a remote, off-campus position based in one or two Prince George’s County Public Schools PGCPS high schools during the school year.
  • Advisors must have reliable means of transportation to travel between assigned school(s).
  • Advisors must have the ability and flexibility to work between the hours of 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday with the possibility of evening and weekend hours to accommodate outreach, enrollment, and recruitment of program participants.
  • There will be occasional required travel to Largo Main Campus for professional development and meetings.
  • During PGCPS school closures (e.g. holidays, summer, spring break), Advisors will be assigned to work at one of the three (3) PGCC campus locations—Largo Main Campus, University Town Center, or Laurel College Center.
  • Final candidates for hire may be required to meet with the Vice President for Student Affairs, or an appointee prior to official hire.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
  • As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
  • A background investigation and fingerprint screening will be conducted prior to the offer of employment.
