March 2021 Legislative Update

CAPACRAO March 2021 Legislative Update

Policymakers have been busy in recent weeks. Miguel Cardona was confirmed as the secretary of the US Department of Education, a new COVID relief bill was passed in the House of Representatives, and more. This AACRAO transcript provides a good roundup of what is happening at the federal level.

State legislative sessions are also currently in progress. Higher education bills are always on the table, however the educational focus for most legislators is on K-12 education and how best to re-open schools and deal with the fallout from COVID-19. State budget deficits could also contribute to tighter budgets for public higher education institutions, however the COVID-19 relief bill being considered in the U.S. Congress could change the equation if passed by the Senate and signed into law by President Biden.

This update was written by Warren Bryan, Legislative Affairs Committee Chair.
